My sister and her family came to spend the weekend with us this past weekend. We had a great time. It is so nice when we get up in the morning, everyone in their PJs, and just have our caffeine and talk. Sometimes we reminisce, and sometimes we talk about what's happening these days.
We did some reminiscing this past weekend. Somehow my sister brought up the time that we were kids, and the birds tried to kill us. I was probably 8, and she was 5. We had a huge tree in our backyard that we had a tire swing on. There was a little metal building that had been kind of sort of turned into a playhouse, and it was about twenty feet from the tree. We could be found there almost any afternoon.
One day we went running down to the tire swing, because it was a pretty good ways from the house. We ran down there and one of us got on the swing. I don't recall if I was getting on the swing or getting ready to push her on the swing. But all of a sudden there were birds everywhere. At first it was kind of cool. Like, oh wow, look at all those birds.
Then they turned on us. They started diving for us. It wasn't just one bird diving for us, it was several. In our minds they were everywhere, but in reality I am sure there were just a few and it seemed like we were on the set of some horror movie where the birds kill the little kids.
It felt like the birds got reallly close to our heads, reality check...probably not. But those stinkin' birds scared the poo out of us. We ran as fast as we could to get out of there. We had a detached garage, and we were a little closer to that than the house so that is where we went. We stood in there for a few minutes trying to get up the nerve to run from the garage to the house.
We worked up the courage and made it to the house to tell mom about our latest adventure.
So, I told you all of that to tell you this.
IT HAPPENED AGAIN!
Okay, not the same exact way, but the birds really, seriously did get close this time.
Saturday afternoon my sister and I were out roaming in the canyon while the boys were playing on the zip line. I had my camera with me, so we were just capturing everything. We ventured off to look at a bird's nest way up in a tree. You would think we would learn with our experience with birds. Now that we think back on it, we are pretty sure that the birds that tried to kill us were just protecting their babies. Makes sense now. Back then they were just killer birds.
So, we go look at the nest. Hmmm, look over here I here my sister say. I look and there is a hole where it looks like some varmit must be living. We keep walking and talking, and all of a sudden we are surrounded. Surrounded by birds. Birds of all kinds. There were Robins, and that pretty little lady (I am guessing it is a female bird) in the photo above. Which just happens to be one of my favorite birds in the whole bird file. There was a Cardinal too. Okay, so there were only a few different birds, but there were at least a hundred. No lie! They were everywhere you turned. And if we stood still enough they would go about their business. There is a creek running through the canyon, so they were bathing, and drinking out of the creek. Some were perched on a limb, and others were flying around. They were flitting. :)
Then it happened. We heard the boys playing, and making all kinds of noise. We tried to quiet them, but as you know, boys will be boys no matter how old they are. They scared the birds. Yep. All of the birds took off. There were two that flew so close to me that I could have reached out and touched them had I been fast enough. But instead of running, this time we both just froze. We couldn't move. But we made it out alive, without a scratch. We didn't even get pooped on. All those birds getting scared off and not one of them pooped on us. I would say we had a pretty good day.
Here's one more shot of my favorite bird that day. Enjoy!
